I’m being forced to marry in the UK
If you are being forced to get married in the UK, and are in the UK now:
  • Call the Forced Marriage Unit: 020 7008 0151 They are open 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday. If you are low on credit, they can call you back.
  • When the FMU is closed, call the Foreign Office Response Centre: 020 7008 1500. It might take a while to get through, but keep trying.
  • If you are in immediate danger right now and cannot get through to the FMU, then call the Police on 999.
They will not tell your family. Your call will be completely confidential. They will help advise you on what to do in your particular situation.
I’m abroad and being forced into marriage
If you are a British national abroad and are being forced into marriage, contact the nearest British Consulate, Embassy or High Commission who will be able to help you:These organisations will contact the Forced Marriage Unit in Britain who will try to get you out of the situation and back to the UK.The more information you give, the easier it will be for them to be able to help you. Details about your passport, flights and where you are will all be useful.If you can’t contact them yourself, ask someone you can trust to do it for you. Give them as much information as possible.
I’m being taken abroad and am scared I’ll be forced into marriage there
If you are a British national being taken abroad and worried you might be forced into marriage when you’re away, you can do the following:Decide if you really have to go. Things become much more difficult once you are away: you might be isolated, be unable to escape the emotional pressure, be watched all the time, have no money, have no access to your passport, ticket or even a telephone. You can contact the Forced Marriage Unit for advice on what you may be able to do: 020 7008 0151. If you do go:
  • 1. Make a copy of your passport
  • 2. Find out your flight details and make a copy of the tickets if possible
  • 3. Find out where you will be staying if possible
  • 4. Find out the number of the British Embassy or High Commission where you are going and keep it with you. If you are in trouble when you are away and you contact them, they will get in touch with the Forced Marriage Unit in Britain and try to help get you back safely. If you have a friend or someone you can trust, give them the details of 1, 2 and 3 above before you go, and the number of the Forced Marriage Unit. If anything does happen while you are away, these details could help get you back safely.
