Ali’s Story
In collaboration with Judith Trust Ali is a 28 year old man who has mild learning difficulties as well as a personality disorder. At the moment Ali’s mum is his main carer and she is finding it very difficult to look after him.Ali’s mother has just taken him over to India to get married to a young woman as she knows that he cannot marry her son in this country. In India his bride is of a poor background and her family would not be able to give a dowry and she can come to Britain. When Ali’s wife came to this country she became his full time carer, she has no support networks of any kind. Many times she was feeling depressed and isolated Often these women are expected to have a child to continue with the family name, some have even gone as far as IVF treatment. If Ali was to marry in this country most priests and registrars would refuse to marry him, as they may feel that Ali does not understand the concept of marriage. Ali thinks it’s acceptable for his wife to look after him, he feels that this is her duty.
